Twitter for iPhone crash on 3G resolved

Last night I decided to downgrade my iPhone 3G back to version 3.1.3 of the iOS firmware. I experienced the same issues as many others and none of the fixes worked for me. The downgrade went well and I have a usable iPhone again.

However, the only app that failed to work after the downgrade was the official Twitter iPhone app. Apparently this was a known issue and have been resolved, but in my case it was still failing. I tried some other Twitter clients but being a die hard Tweetie fan I decided to work around the problem and downgrade back to v3.0.1 of the Twitter app. Here’s how:

  • In order for this to work you need the file named Twitter 3.0.1.ipa. I found mine in the Recycle Bin, but you may need to Google for a copy.
  • Plug-in your phone. In iTunes, go to Devices,Your Phone, Apps and then deselect the Twitter app.
  • Sync the phone. iTunes will display a warning but go ahead and remove the Twitter app
  • Search for a file named Twitter 3.0.2.ipa on your system. On my system it was in C:\Users\\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Mobile Applications
  • Move this file to a backup location. Copy the Twitter 3.0.1.ipa located previously in to this folder.
  • If you go to iTunes now and open the Apps section you’ll see that the Twitter app has an exlamation mark, but iTunes allow you to locate the missing file. Select the Twitter 3.0.1.ipa file.
  • Go back to Devices, Your Phone, Apps and then select the Twitter app and sync your phone again.
  • This worked for me, hope it does for you too!

    Update
Twitter just released v3.0.3 and the problem has now been resolved for me.

    1. I had the same problem on Saturday when I upgraded Twitter to 3.0.2 from 3.0.1 on my iPhone 3G running 3.1.2. Yeah It is a know issue as you mentioned and a fix is coming but had to do like you did to get up and running again, lucky I had 3.0.1 in the trash so could go back to that, WHEW !!!

    2. There is now a 3.0.3 release out and as they tweeted :- @atebits Twitter for iPhone 3.0.3 finally approved – crossing my fingers for you OS 3.1.x users – sorry for the wait!
I will give it a go tomorrow and see if it is better.

    3. Thanks Mike. Just gave 3.0.3 a go and it works fine on my side!
